Shun Kumagai

Based in Akita City, Japan.

Shun Kumagai creates layers of textures through applying different materials in his works. His work is made using the glass casting technique. Each wax mold is formed by hand, resulting in a shape that is unique each time. The appearance of the soil and metal in the glass is shown depending on the time of the day. In a dark room, the character of soil becomes apparent and the object may look like ceramics. During sunrise, the character of glass appears stronger, as if the object itself casts the light.

From Shun: “If you have one of my art pieces, I would like you to enjoy feeling the changes of time throughout the days and seasons from it.”
