Toru Hatta

Toru Hatta is based in Osaka. He primarily produces white, black, and Mishima technique ceramics with a focus on the natural characteristics of clay. However within these focused styles he extracts variety expression.
The clay he uses is a blend of raw materials from the Mino region, one of Japan’s oldest ceramic producing regions. He uses red clay with high iron content. The pottery is molded with this clay and fired in a primitive anagama kiln fueled by firewood, and then fired again in a gas kiln. The reason he insists on these two firing methods is to bring out the complex expressions of the clay, which can only be obtained through this process.
